Kyolaba: Wig Tutorial 101

A 7 step guide on how to wear a wig.

As Dolly Parton says, "People always ask me how long it takes to do my hair. I don't know, I'm never there." Nothing beats wigs when it comes to looking flawless in a short period of time. Here are some easy steps to follow in order to wear your wig correctly.

Step 1: Pick a Wig Type

There are three (3) major kinds of wigs: the full lace, front lace, and the open top (non-lace). There are also three main materials they can be made out of, which are human hair, human hair blend, and synthetic hair.

Step 2: Prepare your hair.

If you have a lot of hair, try tying it up in a bun or do a braid and then pin the tail of the braid to the top of the head. You can also do smaller braids just to keep it at the back of your head and out of the face.

Step 3: Put on a wig cap.

Wig caps aren’t always necessary but it can allow for a more secure wig placement on the head.

Step 4: Apply the glue or adhesive tape.

Open Top Wig (non-lace): glue or adhesive tape not necessary. Typically comes with 3-4 combs, has adjustable straps on the inside where you can move the straps up or loosen it according to your comfort.

Full Lace/Front Lace Wig: needs glue or adhesive tape but most of them come with adjustable straps on the inside.

Step 5: Place the wig on your head.

Put the wig on from front to back of the head by placing the hairline of the wig against the real hairline. Tip: Use one hand to put it in place and use the other hand to pull back.

Step 6: Secure the wig.

Place the wig ear tabs symmetrically above the ears and lined across from each other on the head. Once it’s positioned correctly, you will know that your wig is on right!

Step 7: Style, accessorize and be confident!

Once you finally have your wig on, feel free to style and accessorize it! A wig is almost like wearing a hat, if you’re not used to wearing a wig - it’s going to feel weird. Go home and practice. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect! Wear it around the house to get comfortable with it. Most importantly, be confident when wearing a wig!
